What is Headless CMS?

As Customer Experience grows in importance for organizations and their websites, the storage and delivery of digital content becomes a key concern. Headless CMS is a way to put your content first by making your content storage input-agnostic. This gives you the flexibility to maintain your content without disrupting your website's functionality and to deliver a true omni-channel experience.

"Headless CMS means marketers and developers can build amazing content today, and—importantly—future-proof their content operation to deliver consistently great content everywhere." -Sitecore

Headless CMS is a back-end only style of CMS that uses APIs to connect various content inputs to your site, which creates a decentralized (thus Headless) content repository. This allows your content creators to work within nearly any system and allows your content managers to pull from nearly any source.

In a Headless CMS, creating and storing content is the primary purpose. Because Headless CMS' must connect to a separate front-end system, content is pushed directly from the repository to any type of device or front end using APIs. This flexibility enables organizations to achieve more effective omni-channel marketing.

The simplicity of the layers also lends an enormous benefit in the form of security. The API is typically read-only and placed behind layers of code, away from the administrative side of the Headless CMS, often housed on another server and domain. The separation ensures protection against the numerous anonymous attacks that can occur on a regular basis.

In the short term, Headless CMS simplifies creating and managing content across multiple forms of delivery, while the long term benefits extend into the future developments in store for the Internet of Things, systematic improvements for developers, and even artificial intelligence.
